Reba Debuts New Season On WB

Reba premiered its third season to rave reviews last Friday night. In the September 20-26 issue of TV Guide, Matt Roush says, "Reba's a keeper, effortlessly appealing in an amusing show that fits her perfectly. Leading off a reconstructed comedy lineup, she'll give ABC's new TGIF some tough competition."

McEntire was busy promoting the premiere last week. She appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, KTLA and E! In addition, McEntire spent time with More Magazine (December issue) and syndicated radio personality Blair Garner.

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week McEntire completes her interview with 48 Hours. The CBS crew visited her in the recording studio in Nashville over the summer, and now adds a TV set visit to their Reba piece. Watch for the segment to appear in a special hour-long country-focused broadcast in November.

McEntire will also visit with some of her country music radio friends this week. On Thursday morning, she will be a call-in guest to longtime friend Gerry House's morning show on WSIX in Nashville. On Friday, McEntire will visit with the KZLA morning team in Los Angeles. McEntire and cast are working on episodes 5 and 6 of Reba. The show airs on Fridays at 8 p.m. on WB.

REBA SAYS "REBA" BASED IN CASTS' OWN REALITY

Reba McEntire says that one of the reasons the stories on her hit sitcom "Reba" ring true, is that they sometimes stem from real life experiences of the cast.

"When we're trying to find the stories for the next season, we'll all sit down and just visit," Reba explained to us. "We'll visit and say, 'you know what happened to me one time,' and 'this will be a funny story because this happened to my first cousin, back in where ever we're from', so we'll just draw off of what happened, and the story grows from that. And any time that comes from a truthful place, you can perform it honestly."

REBA PLANS TO TOUR NEXT SUMMER

Reba tells us that next summer after she wraps production of her 3rd season of "Reba" she plans on doing some shows to promote her upcoming new album ROOM TO BREATHE.

"We're not sure what we're going to do, Narvel and I have been talking about it, but we will be putting on some shows next year. We're just looking at all aspects which we see will give me more versatility and to have a lot of fun with it to get out there and promote the music."

REBA ON DVD

20th Century Fox has jumped into the "TV Shows On DVD" poll arena, with brand-new survey that asks "Which of the following TV shows would you most like to see released on DVD? Please pick your top 5!"

Shows listed that you can vote for are:

Ally McBeal
Bernie Mac
Boston Public
Dharma & Greg
Chicago Hope
Greg the Bunny
Harsh Realm
John Doe
The Lone Gunmen
Millenium
Newhart
Nothing Sacred
Picket Fences
The Practice
The Pretender
Reality TV Programming
Reba
Remington Steele
Roswell
The Simpsons
The Time Tunnel
Titus
The Tracey Ullman Show
The Wonder Years
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

The inclusion of some shows is surprising, frankly. The Wonder Years and Ally McBeal, it's been hinted in the past, would cost so much in music rights licenses that a DVD release of these (beyond what's already been seen) might be prohibitive. Here is hoping that a sufficiently high response for these two shows would convince Fox that it's worth spending the money!

Likewise, Roswell (still the #1 most-requested show at TVShowsOndDVD) has been said to have high music costs; it is probably in a similar situation. Another Fox-owned show that's in the same boat - WKRP - has noticably been left off the poll. It's probably the most expensive one of them all, so Fox probably wants to test the waters with the others first.

Shows on that survey may be included for reasons that have to do with their historical importance, too: Remington Steel of course is the show that brought Pierce Brosnan to the attention of the folks who produce the 007 movies, and The Tracey Ullman Show is the series that was the birthplace of The Simpsons.

Meanwhile at radio, I'M GONNA TAKE THAT MOUNTAIN continued its storm up the chart. In its second week out the song leapt to #26 and was the most added country song in the nation. This week the song is expected to move several spots higher..

ART OF BEING REBA MCENTIRE

What I like about Reba: "I think I was better in the second season than the first because I was more relaxed. I like this character very much. She is a strong woman. She is very protective of her family but she makes a lot of boo boos. She doesn't like to admit this, which gets her into some very funny situations. I'm a big fan of funny."

Dear Diary: "I made a New Year resolution a couple of years ago to videotape a portion of every day. And, well, that lasted until about the middle of January. Then, I decided I was going to write everyday. I would write about something that happened to me, something interesting. That lasted about a week. Nowadays, my appointment book is about as close to a diary as I can get."

Happy meals: "We're into having big family dinners. When we are in Nashville we have lots of big gatherings with our kids and grandkids. However, the best thing I am famous for in the kitchen is making reservations. So, they will usually come over to the house if I am not cooking! I have been known to make a very good bean soup though."

NEW PRICING POLICY

Universal Music Group, World's Largest Music Company, Dramatically Reduces CD Prices

UMG Institutes a $12.98 Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price on

Virtually all Top Line CDs

NEW YORK and SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Music Group (UMG) announced today an aggressive plan to significantly reduce the cost consumers pay for CDs by decreasing its wholesale prices and by instituting a $12.98 Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) on virtually all top line CDs in the U.S.

UMG will introduce a new pricing policy with the aim of bringing music fans back into retail stores and driving music sales. The program, which will begin in the fourth quarter of 2003, will eliminate $16.98, $17.98 and $18.98 equivalent MSRPs. UMG believes retailers will begin offering the lower priced CDs to consumers as soon as October 1, 2003.

As part of this new policy, UMG's labels plan to significantly increase their direct-to-consumer advertising to raise music fans' awareness of the artists and their music.

Concurrently, UMG will also reduce its wholesale price on cassettes so its MSRP for top line releases will be $8.98.

UMG's roster includes such renowned artists as Ashanti, Mary J. Blige, blink-182, Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow, Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent, Enrique Iglesias, India.Arie, Elton John, Diana Krall, Nelly, No Doubt, Puddle of Mudd, Reba McEntire, Stevie Wonder, Sting, t.A.T.u., Texas, Shania Twain and U2. The new pricing policy will also apply to UMG's historic catalog of recordings which includes artists such as ABBA, Louis Armstrong, James Brown, Eric Clapton, Patsy Cline, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bob Marley, Nirvana, The Police, Rod Stewart, The Who, Hank Williams and the Motown catalog, which includes The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes and The Jackson Five.

"Our new pricing policy will allow us to take the initiative in making music the best entertainment value and most compelling option for consumers," said Doug Morris, Chairman and CEO, Universal Music Group. "UMG is responsible for almost 30% of all album sales in the U.S. so we are uniquely positioned to try this new strategy. We strongly believe that when the prices are dramatically reduced on so many titles, we will drive consumers back to stores and significantly bolster music sales."

"Music fans will benefit from the price reductions we are announcing today," said Jim Urie, President, Universal Music & Video Distribution. "Our new pricing model will enable U.S. retailers to offer music at a much more appealing price point in comparison to other entertainment products. We are confident this pricing approach will drive music fans back into retail stores."

Reba Sets Record With New Single

Reba McEntire's new single, "I'm Gonna Take That Mountain," has broken all previous radio records for this year, making the superstar the most-added female of 2003 in her single's debut week. "I'm Gonna Take That Mountain" enters the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at Number 38, and the R&R chart at Number 34.

When it comes to finding material for a new album, McEntire says there are a few things she looks for in a song. "It could be the melody, but usually it's the lyrics in combination with the melody," McEntire says. "When it touches my heart, when I get goose bumps and I keep rewinding it--hearing it again over and over and over--that's the type of song I want to sing. It's a horrible thing to have a hit that you hate, cause you're gonna have to sing it over and over and over for hopefully a few years."

At the top of McEntire's list of song must-haves is a passion factor. "When it touches my heart, that's when I hope it will touch the audience's heart, so I'm listening for something that's relatable [and] that I love," McEntire adds. "I can't sell a song I don't love. I have to be passionate about it, and you usually can tell on an album. 'I don't think Reba really liked that song. Maybe somebody talked her into it.'"

"I'm Gonna Take That Mountain" is the first single from McEntire's forthcoming album, Room To Breathe, which hits stores on November 18.

Room To Breathe is McEntire's first studio album in four years.

In the meantime, the singer continues to work on the third season of her hit sitcom, Reba. The new season premieres on September 12 at 8 p.m. ET on the WB network.

BILLBOARD CHECKS IN

"I'm Gonna Take That Mountain" debuted today on Billboard at #55!

A NEW VIDEO IS POSSIBLE

Will she do it? Fans have been asking if there were plans to film a video for the new single "I'm Gonna Take That Mountain". Reba was on Radio Lia tonight and the subject came up. What do you think it means? Straight from the stars mouth:

"We've already got concepts for a video."
-Reba (on Radio Lia)

Webmaster comment: Remember that the 3rd season of Reba has begun already. Even if a video concept is approved, they may not be able to work production into Reba's schedule. It's great to hear they are considering it, but understand that it may not come to be.

I'M GONNA TAKE THAT MOUNTAIN LYRICS

I'm Gonna Take that mountain
I was born a stubborn soul
Aint afraid of the great unknown, nor
the windin road thats all uphill
This is just a stumblin block
Intimidating wollow rock
If you think this broken heart
Will break my will

I'm gonna take that mountain
Aint nothing gonna slow me down
And there aint no way around it
Gonna leave it level with the ground
Aint just gonna cross it,climbit, fight it
I'm gonna take that mountain

It's overwhelmin lookin up
knowin it's a challenge of me
against this heartache to survive
I may slip and fall
But even if I have to crawl
I will break through
To the healin side

Repeat chorus

ACTING OUT

Singers who aren't singing line up to appear on television in sitcoms and reality shows.

LOS ANGELES -- A hot trend in music these days is the crossover. The term "crossover" once meant a singer in one genre would have a hit song in another.

Today, crossover also means singers becoming actors. Top rap, country and rock singers now are starring in their own television shows.

Country music queen Reba McEntire enters her third season as star of the WB Network comedy "Reba."

The reasons musicians give for making the move to television are varied: television reaches millions of potential CD buyers, the exposure can recharge a fading career or there is big money to be made.

Starring on a television series doesn't mean the end of a musical career. Traditionally, situation comedies film three episodes in three weeks. Then production shuts down for a week and then the cycle starts again until there are usually 22 or 23 episodes for a full season. Plus, there are three months every summer when production stops. That period could be used for touring.

"I would never go away from my singing because I love that so much. That's my passion," McEntire says. "But I am totally surprised I'm doing this much acting."

STARSTRUCK CLOSE TO A DEAL?

This is a clip of an article from The Tennessean

Up the street, the 205,000-square-foot office building under construction is expected to help give the area another boost. Nashville law firm Boult Cummings Conners & Berry is anchoring the Eakin Partners building project.

''The Eakin building really helped us all,'' Caden said.

With construction under way on the office building at the roundabout, developers have shown more interest in the nearby Barbara Mandrell theater property, said Cliff Williamson, chief operating officer of Reba McEntire's company, Starstruck Entertainment, which owns the vacant theater.

''We've got three developers looking at it pretty strongly,'' Williamson said, with a fourth one in the wings. ''It wouldn't surprise me if one of them went to contract soon.''

But Williamson is cautious because Starstruck has been close to a deal before, and nothing has happened. ''I feel like the odds are better now,'' he said. ''I'm very optimistic that something will happen by the end of the year.''

Starstruck had a deal for a W hotel but canceled its contract with a developer in October 2001 — after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks crippled an already-ailing hotel industry. Starstruck wants a hotel on the site, Williamson said, and the interested developers are keen on that idea.

WONDER WOMAN

Reba McEntire blasts off with a third season of her TV show, a new album and plans to return to the concert trail

Right now, Reba McEntire just might be the hardest working woman in show business.

The radiant redhead is filming another season of her hit TV sitcom, Reba, has a new album in the works and is putting together plans for an upcoming tour.

"I've got 12 songs ready to go," declares Reba of the new CD, scheduled for release by year's end. "This will be my first album of original songs since 1999. And I will definitely tour again, probably starting next summer, so I'm very excited about that, too."

It's already shaped up as an exciting year for Reba. First, her popular series was renewed by the WB network.

"A lot of TV shows never make it that far, but I don't feel like we've beaten the odds yet," she admits. "As soon as you don't make the dollar anymore, you won't be around, so I'm not taking any of this for granted."

Capping off her big year, Reba added to her mantel of trophies when she received the Country Radio Broadcasters Career Achievement Award in Nashville. Two of her best buddies, Trisha Yearwood and Sara Evans, saluted her with a medley of some of her past hits. Raved Trisha, "I think the top female in country music has always been Reba."

Reba takes all the accolades and awards in humble stride. "I'm still me," she insists. "Maybe a little more knowledgeable than I was 20 years ago -- but I'm still the same old country girl."

Mandrell, McEntire fondly recall working with Hope

Bob Hope's Nashville ties were few, and he appeared here less than a dozen times, but Hope left strong impressions with two country stars, Barbara Mandrell and Reba McEntire.

Mandrell, who recruited Hope for her TV series and for a 1988 fund-raiser softball game here, recalled Hope as charming and witty on and off camera.

Hope, standing on a balcony inside Mandrell's old 27,000-square-foot log mansion, Fontanel, in 1988, quipped: ''I've played lots of hotels that weren't this big.''

Mandrell invited Hope to be captain of the opposing team in the 1988 Barbara Mandrell Softball Classic, a star-studded event that raised money for Vanderbilt's organ transplant program. That event also included L.L. Cool J, Bob Costas, Oprah Winfrey and Meat Loaf among its non-Nashville celebrities. Mandrell last saw Hope when he dropped in one of her shows in Branson, Mo., in the mid-1990s. ''He was witty and fun and charming and made you feel like you were the one and only in the room,'' Mandrell said. ''He made you feel very special.''

McEntire appeared on two of Hope's national TV specials and at three benefit shows. ''Each time I learned so much from him. When that red camera light came on, Bob came to life. He was the consummate entertainer,'' McEntire said through a staff member yesterday.

''Not only was Bob Hope fortunate enough to live for 100 years, he was also fortunate to spend his life doing something he loved — entertaining.''

Hope's Nashville appearances included a 1949 show at Ryman Auditorium, a 1954 show at Vanderbilt, a Johnny Cash TV show appearance in 1970, a 1991 Christmas TV taping, his Grand Ole Opry debut and a gig at the 1978 Tennessee State Fair that drew more than 20,000 people.

At his state fair appearance, Hope received a lifetime membership from the Air Force Sergeants Association, a presentation set up by Nashville booking agent and former country singer Jimmy Case, who himself entertained troops overseas and had received the same award from the same organization. ''He was very moved by it,'' Case said.

Reba Bows First Single From New CD Aug. 25

Aug. 25 will be a big day for Reba McEntire fans. That’s when MCA Records releases the first single from her just-completed (but still-untitled) album. The song is “I’m Gonna Take That Mountain,” written by Jerry Salley and Melissa Peirce. “It’s a real country cut,” reports Buddy Cannon, who co-produced McEntire’s album with Norro Wilson. “We had Dan Tyminski [of ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’ fame] to come in and play some guitar and mandolin on it,” Cannon continues. “On background vocals, we had Sonya Isaacs and Curtis Wright. It’s really good. I think it’s an expected kind of thing for her. It’s just real high energy. I think it’s going to send us off and running.”

The album also features a duet with Vince Gill, “It Just Has to Be This Way,” by Liz Hengber, James Dean Hicks and Anthony Smith. The 12-cut package will be out on Nov. 18. “I tell you, man, it’s a great album,” Cannon enthuses. “ It’s one of the highlights of my career.” Coming from a man who’s produced such other cultural phenoms as Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Billy Ray Cyrus and Sammy Kershaw, that’s a pretty persuasive endorsement.

Her decorating style? McEntirely her husband's

Personal Decorating Style: "Clutter. My husband is the interior decorator and the one with taste in the family. He has great style."

Favorite Decorative Items: "Family pictures—things that mean something. He goes with the color palate, I go with things that touch my heart."

Make Sure the Fridge is Stocked: Although she says she is no cook, Reba loves hanging out in her kitchen, where she can hone another skill: "I eat good!"
